Letter from Steve Thomas.
[Actual date of letter in Dec is unknown] Furnished courtesy ACandyRose, Cybesleuths Forum Dear Citizens and Friends,........................................ December 2001 As we reach the 5 year mark in this senseless killing, it is disheartening that this tragedy continues to go unresolved. Everyone involved in this case feels disappointed as this anniversary date approaches. This was and continues to be a terrible reflection on the criminal justice system in Boulder. There was some great effort, though, by several caught up in this tornado of a case. Mike Kane, for example, the special prosecutor who inherited this case after two years and who did everything he could to seek the truth. At this point in time, it is unfortunate that the Ramseys continue with their $80-million dollar lawsuit against me, for speaking out about this injustice -- claiming that their civil rights were violated and that they were libeled. This is unfortunate. Our court system allows for the filing of such suits, but one then has to defend themselves from such a claim, no matter how frivolous. But in our great country, it is not against the law to have an opinion and to be able to express it. That is a fundamental principle we enjoy as Americans, protected by our First Amendment. Many places in the world do not allow for such freedoms. The Ramseys have no right to silence me or anyone else who wishes to speak about this tragedy I continue to fight this lawsuit with my own money, and with all proceeds from the book. I have had to sell my home in the process. I am terribly blessed to be represented byDaniel Petrocelli and Chuck Diamond, two of the finest attorneys in this country. You may recall Mr. Petrocelli successfully prosecuting the wrongful-death suit against O.J. Simpson. We are committed to fighting this lawsuit, but I can only fight this as long as my means allow me to. It is difficult to ask for help, but this effort continues to be staggering.A small donation would help defray the monumental legal expenses incurred in defending myself from this suit. For those of you who have sent your kind sentiment and support, I wish I could thank each of you personally. Please allow this simple "thank you" to suffice for the time being, and please know how grateful I am for your support. Let's all continue to pray for a resolution to this case. Let's all continue to be thankful and grateful for all that we enjoy in this great country. With kindest regards, Steve Thomas
